This course, INFO 500, is a sampler of both faculty research with speakers from each Area, and an introduction to a variety of informatics research techniques. Because informatics students will be spread across campus, this seminar guarantees that they will interact with all entering classmates and gain exposure to a broad range of informatics research areas. This reinforces the highly interdisciplinary nature of the program.
Students are required to take one semester of INFO 500 for 0 credit hours during their first semester of the PhD program and after that, another semester of INFO 500 for 1 credit hour. Students taking 0 hours will be exposed to the breadth of informatics through the faculty lectures and the progress of their more advanced peers. Students taking 1 hour will make a presentation of their research to faculty and to the incoming cohort of their peers.
